Initial state and neurological challenge

Selma was born with an open head, without a skull bone. By the age of ten, she had undergone more than 20 brain surgeries, with each procedure posing a direct risk to her life.

Despite the surgeries, the functioning of her left and right brain hemispheres was completely uncontrolled and uncombined – there was no communication between the hemispheres. The official prognosis was relentless:
